Update on the TRU Micro-Credential Development

Below are updates on our ongoing efforts to develop a drug awareness training course specifically tailored for tradespeople in British Columbia as of December 05, 2024.

    Cultural Mapping

We continue to make significant progress in developing the TRU micro-credential addressing the drug overdose crisis in the trades. Our efforts include completing two interviews, analyzing collected maps to identify key themes, and conducting the first iteration of a naloxone workshop. Upcoming initiatives involve interviews with women in trades through TRU’s programs, engaging individuals with lived experiences from events like “Rethinking Drinking: A Community Conversation,” and collaborating with partners such as the Kamloops Integrated Treatment Team and United Way. With extended funding from the Vancouver Foundation, video and audio recordings will continue through February 2025, ensuring these critical insights contribute meaningfully to the micro-credential’s learning outcomes.

Progress on the Drug Awareness Training Course

Below are updates on our ongoing efforts to develop a drug awareness training course specifically tailored for tradespeople in British Columbia as of September 1, 2024.

Following the successful Trades Drug Overdose Mapping Exhibition in March 2024 and the Annual Trade Convention in May 2024, we have engaged in extensive consultations and collaborations with knowledgeable individuals in trades and education. Their insights have been invaluable in shaping the course’s content and approach. One innovative aspect of the course will feature videos of question-and-answer interviews with experienced tradespeople. These interviews will share their personal knowledge of the toxic drug crisis in the trades, their lived experiences, strategies for addressing the drug crisis, and the importance of having open and honest conversations about this reality.

On August 22nd, 2024, we officially kicked off the interview process; the insights shared have been invaluable. Inspired by the powerful cultural maps drawn by a seasoned trade professional during our exhibition, which vividly depicted the personal impact of the crisis, we’ve crafted and asked questions that encourage meaningful dialogue. One of the interviewees was Jim McCarthy.

An introduction to the naloxone training by Lana Fine

As part of our ongoing commitment to education, a naloxone training session was conducted by researcher Lana Fine and filmed by videographer Luke Redgrove. Naloxone training has been an integral part of our initiatives from the start, and it will be a crucial component of the accessible and comprehensive course material. Read the full update here.
